The side of Checkerboard Mesa (Zion Nat'l Park, Utah), an outcrop of the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. This formation preserves fossilized sand dunes, which were part of the world's largest dune sea 180 million years ago. A Caltech geology student provides scale.
