    Architectured Octupus

next image

Arturo Mateos
Graduate Student

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of architectured polymeric octet nano-lattice. Nano-lattices like these ones take advantage of architecture and size effects at the nanoscale to create extremely strong yet lightweight metamaterials. Each beam is only 5 microns in length and 1 micron in diameter. The nano-lattices were fabricated using two-photon lithography. On the left side of the image, the viewer can see a manufacturing defect where polymer "exploded" and created a suction-cup like feature that made the artist think of octopuses.
