This image is from an optically cleared region of intestine from a mouse reconstituted with human immune cells that was infected with HIV. The tissue was stained for cell surface lectins (green), human T cells, (red), HIV (magenta), and nuclei (blue). The long thin cells around the periphery are muscle cells while the central teardrop shaped cells are made up of mouse intestinal cells and human T cells harboring HIV virions.
