This is a photo of a bacterial colony (a double knock-out of Pseudomonas aeruginosa), which wrinkles up to optimize oxygen intake. The colony was grown on an agar plate supplemented with Congo red and Coomassie blue dyes. The dyes bind to proteins and extracellular matrix, and differences in coloration are the result of differences in protein and ECM production. The photo was taken with a digital microscope.
