    Bouncing drop creation

next image

Simon Lapointe
Graduate Student

A conventional toothpick is quickly pulled out of a vertically oscillating shallow pool filled with silicone oil. Images on the first row were taken 10 ms apart while images on the second and third rows were taken 3.33 ms apart. The drop created through this process has a diameter of about 0.7mm and bounces on the surface of the oil indefinitely without coalescing. This image was taken as part of Ae/APh 104c.
