These nano-mushrooms are made of nanocrystalline platinum. For a sense of scale, the mushroom stalks are 120 nm in width. These structures are nanoscale mechanical testing specimens which reveal the effect of sample size reduction on mechanical strength and fracture. For mechanical testing, the mushroom head is pulled using diamond grips. In this process, mushrooms are some times separated from the substrate and stick to each other in creative ways.
