    Platinum Nano-Dandelion

next image

Wendy Gu
Graduate Student

Scanning electron microscope image of a platinum nanocrystalline nanostructure. The dandelion stalk measures only 100 nm in diameter. The needle-like crystal growth on the dandelion head is indicative of nanoscale grains, which lend this material extraordinarily high strength compared to metals with conventionally sized grains. This structure was formed by electroplating into a pore in a polymer thin film which was subsequently removed.
