The von Kármán vortex street is a fluid instability in which oscillating eddies are shed downstream of an object in the flow. In these images, a high-speed camera captures the reflection of monochromatic light from a soap film, illuminating the eddies in the flow. The three images show flow around a cylinder (top), two cylinders of different diameters (middle), and a flat plate at a 45° angle to the flow (bottom). This is the work of the members of the Spring 2013 Ae 251b Closed-Loop Flow Control class: Daniel Araya, Edward Burns, Subrahmanyam Duvvuri, Andres Goza, Esteban Hufstedler, Jay Qi, Tess Saxton-Fox, Rongxiao Zhang, Frederick Miller, Thibault Flinois, Professor Beverly McKeon, and Dr. Peter Schmid.
