This movie shows the time evolution of a 2D array of oscillators in the Kuramoto Model. Each pixel shows the phase of an oscillator, which varies from 0 to 2*Pi. Each oscillator has a random intrinsic frequency, but interactions between neighbors cause them to synchronize to the same frequency. One can see the movement of vortices, which are topological defects that destroy synchronization. The Kuramoto Model has been used to explain synchronization of fireflies, neural networks, and even clapping of audiences.
