4 scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of a thin film of gold (Au) which was deposited on a sacrificial layer of polymer photoresist. When the photoresist was selectively etched away, the Au film peeled up due to built-in thermal stress and formed a number of interesting three-dimensional shapes. Certain regions of the Au appear transparent as the secondary electrons from the SEM have enough energy to transmit through the thin layers of metal and reach the detector.
