    Mistakes Can Be Beautiful

Ashley Potts
Undergraduate Student

This image resulted from an early attempt to radially rescale a Hubble image of the M51 galaxy. In rescaling the image, I hoped to clarify central features of the galaxy that were otherwise too luminous to resolve. By accidentally switching two variables, I produced overlapping rings. The colors arise from combining three Hubble images taken at different wavelengths and assigning a different color (red, green, or blue) to each wavelength.
