Atomic force microscope image of surface plasmons (coupled electron-photon waves) propagating along a gold-resist interface. Plasmons were excited using an argon laser and were confined to a two-micron-long elliptical resonator. Features smaller than 50 nanometers (one-tenth of the optical wavelength used for plasmon excitation) can be observed. Regions of high plasmon intensity were recorded in the resist as topographic deformations; the color scale indicates height modulation.
