As the driest region in the world, the Atacama Desert of Chile (top) is considered Earth’s best analogue for the Martian surface (bottom). In order to probe the potential for life on Mars, an interdisciplinary team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory studies the resilience of bacterial spores in extreme environments.
