Eddies in the Gulf Stream Second Prize (Click on image below to see a larger size.)
Philip Du Toit Graduate Student, Control and Dynamical Systems
A recently developed computational method is used to visualize eddy structures in the Gulf Stream off the Atlantic seaboard. The image is generated using ocean current velocity data, and reveals intricate eddy structures that are principally responsible for mixing and energy transfer in the ocean.
The 2009 Art of Science Competition was made possible by Student Affairs, the Art Committee, and Robert and Esther Metzner.
