What looks like the topography of a landscape takes place at a much smaller scale. This is the surface of a steel, originally perfectly flat and polished, after a tensile plastic deformation. The grains of the microstructure have rotated under the applied deformation: some emerged from the surface whereas some others 'have plunged inside'. The observation has been made by profilometry over a 5 mm x 5 mm zone.

The 2009 Art of Science Competition was made possible by Student Affairs, the Art Committee, and Robert and Esther Metzner.
