Jennifer Jackson
A very small iron foil is sandwiched between two gem-quality diamond anvils to study material properties at the pressures and temperatures in Earth's core. Pressure has been applied and the iron sample is ready to be heated to temperatures similar to Earth's outer core. Small spheres of ruby are placed to mark the pressure of the iron sample. The inner and outer rings mark the sample chamber and bevels of the diamond anvils, respectively.
